Wow! Life has really kept me from writing but I hope I can do some more of it going forward. Winter is setting in here in Iowa so more time will be spent inside. This DIY comes from one of my favorite projects I have ever done. It was hard to say the least but I couldn't be happier with how it turned out.
I came across this dresser for FREE in Facebook Marketplace awhile back and had to jump on it. It was in pretty rough shape, but that is ok, it was just how I like it.
I couldn't decide what to do with it at first and so naturally in my fashion I sat on my barstool and drank wine until it came to me... a BAR. I was pumped and wanted to get started right away. I decided I wanted some storage in the bottom so I kept the bottom drawer and pulled the top drawers to use for other projects.
I knew I was going to replace the handles on the bottom drawer so It didn't bother me that this was missing it. Next I had to decide what I wanted to do with it. I knew I wanted a shelf and needed room to store wine, open bottles of alcohol and glasses. I took a small sawed cut out the top bar you see to open it up. I planned on making the drawer opening above the drawer a storage rack for wine and to put my shelf right above that.
I went to Menards and picked up this wood to make some shelves to cut to size. I wanted to redo the inside of the open shelf so I decided to get these boards to create a shiplap look. In order to get my spacing right I used two pennies, one on each side to give an even spacing. I then used a nail gun to attach the shiplap and wrap it on the inside of my open shelf.
When I thought about what color to make my exterior I had decided to repaint and give it a fresh white look. I started stripping the paint off of this piece when it suddenly turned into the most beautiful rustic look, so I continued it! For the interior I chose to go with my favorite Minwax stain, dark walnut.
The last couple major decisions to make were how to do the wine storage and the glass storage. I browsed through amazon to find some wine storage racks but couldn't find anything that fits and that I liked. After sitting and drinking some more wine I thought of this design seen below. I even had all of the wood I needed with scraps from the shelves and a little wood laying around. After some measuring I figured out how to be able to get a dozen wine glasses hung. I again took scraps from wood I already had and created little "T" racks and nailed them in to the roof of the cabinet.
The last touch was the handles. I again hit up Menards and found a rack that had sale cabinet knobs. I found two dark knobs that matched that I really liked and they went with the bar perfectly.
Let me tell you... this one did NOT last long!! It actually sold before it was even finished. I was very happy with this one and It was a blast to make. I encourage everyone to get a little creative if you see something free and have FUN with it. Any questions? Feel free to hit me up!
